Understandably, the current owners don’t want to be that vocal about their ownership of one of the most popular houses in the country and haven’t been seen on camera. Unfortunately, that was a one-time-only event and the house is not available for regular rentals. The center of the Home Alone films, Kevin McCallister, was played by actor Macaulay Culkin.

Gone are the days of green and red wallpaper and red carpeting on the stairs in the foyer – now replaced with modern grey paint and blue & white carpeting. The kitchen has also undergone some extensive work, now featuring elegant white shaker cabinets, green tile backsplash, and a small breakfast bar. The tacky wallpaper in the master suite has been replaced with a chic grey & white striped print. Additionally, the once hardwood floors are now decked out in white carpeting. The dining room, which featured red walls in the film, is now adorned in a warm cream color painted with vines and pear trees. Quite the improvement overall…unless you’re a diehard lover of 90s interior design.

The film takes place in the fictional town of Shermer, Illinois. Ferris Bueller from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Samantha Baker from Sixteen Candles and John Bender and all his detention mates from Breakfast Club. Hughes returned time and time again to the North Shore area of Illinois for his films; he thought of all his characters as living in the same universe, but Shermer was special. In December 2021,Airbnb listed a one-night stay in the actual Home Alone house. According to the listing, Kevin's big brother Buzz—whose role in Disney+'s Home Sweet Home Alone remake found him growing up and becoming a security expert—will serve as your "host."

The next morning, Peter and Natalie go out while Kevin stays with Natalie's servants, Mr. Prescott the butler and Molly the maid. Kevin notices his old nemesis, Marv Murchins, and his wife, Vera, scouting the house. After failing to get Mr. Prescott's attention via the intercom, he drives them away by flooding the mansion. When Peter and Natalie return, they refuse to believe Kevin's explanation, especially since Mr. Prescott claims to have seen nothing. Kevin discovers that the security cameras were turned off during the break-in, leading him to believe that Mr. Prescott is in league with Marv and Vera. To cheer themselves up, Kevin, Peter, and Natalie decorate their Christmas tree, although it is later re-trimmed by professional decorators at Natalie's request.

The Real-Life Home Alone House: Then and Now

The royal family and Natalie arrive, and the offenders' plot to kidnap the prince is revealed to Natalie's shock. Mr. Prescott, per Kevin's advice, resigns from his position as her butler. Realizing that their relationship was built on infatuation rather than love and was affecting his responsibilities as a husband and father, Peter breaks up with Natalie, and reconciles with Kate and their children. Grateful to Kevin for his foiling of the kidnapping plot, the royals spend Christmas with the newly-reunited McCallisters, devastating Natalie as Kevin and Prescott give the commands for music to play and snow to fall.

Eight-year-old Alex Pruitt is given the remote control car by Mrs. Hess for shoveling her driveway. He returns home and discovers that he has chickenpox and must stay out of school. The next day, Alex discovers the thieves while spying on his neighbors. After two failed attempts to have them apprehended, Alex attaches a camera to the remote control car and uses it to spy on them, leading to the thieves chasing it when they spot it. Wondering what they want with the toy car, Alex opens it and discovers the stolen chip.

And since we’ve already covered the house in the first Home Alone movie, we thought I’d be the perfect time to do some scouting and find the one in the third movie too, especially since it’s no less beautiful. Clare Carey as Kate McCallister, Kevin, Buzz, and Megan's mother. French Stewart as Marv Murchins, Vera's husband and an old nemesis of Kevin. Despite his name, the character's physical appearance and attire more closely resemble that of his former partner Harry Lyme . After the three initially refuse, Kevin accepts the offer after being bullied by Buzz and revels in the mansion's luxuries.

Oh, and the back door down the set of stairs outside – that actually wasn’t real. A backhoe was brought in to dig up that part of the property so that a fake door and steps could be added in. Kevin’s treehouse was also specifically built for the film and ended up being taken down after filming wrapped. Alex Pruitt, an 8-year-old boy living in Chicago, must fend off international spies who seek a top-secret computer chip in his toy car. With four thieves looking to retrieve the toy car/computer chip gifted to Alex by his unknowing neighbor, Mrs. Hess, the movie’s plot tackles a far more dangerous situation that the first two, despite the light way in which it is presented. That’s not because of the plot, cast, or setting, but rather the result of the ultra-high expectations created by the first two Home Alone movies, and the fondness audiences had for Macaulay Culkin .

Whereas Home Alone 3 featured a standalone plot and new characters, this film brings back several of the main characters from the first two films, including Kevin McCallister, but with all of the roles played by different actors. The plot revolves around Kevin McCallister trying to defend his future stepmother's house from his old nemesis Marv and his sidekick/wife Vera. It was the last film that Rod Daniel directed before his subsequent retirement (partly due to his diagnosis from Parkinson's disease, complications of which resulted in his death in 2016). With the help of recruits Alice Ribbons, Earl Unger, and Burton Jernigan, Beaupre manages to acquire the chip from a contact in Silicon Valley. Home Alone 3 steers clear of the mistakes of the previous films, and makes all new ones.

Roger Ebert was wrong about this one saying, "it's better than the first two." To me, it just sounded rediculous. Kevin McAllister's older brother, Buzz, was said to be the guests' lucky host for the evening. Unfortunately for "Home Alone" fans this time around, the house isn't listed on Airbnb this season. It's one of the most iconic holiday movies, and it just happens to take place in a Chicago suburb. For the film, production changed the interior of the house just slightly, adding a ramp over the staircase and putting up new wallpaper. The crew built an outdoor stairway to the basement and a treehouse, both of which were removed when production was over.

Stupid, poorly acted, and poorly written, Home Alone 3 has got to be the worst installment in the series. It had it's funny moments here and there, so that's why I give it 1 1/2 stars. It makes me feel said how John Hughes would write a movie like this one.

The entire production of Home Alone was shot in the Chicago area! Even the parts that were supposed to be set in the Paris Orly Airport were actually filmed at O’Hare International Airport. The interior of the plane was a set built on a basketball court at the local high school. In fact, the scene where Kevin McCallister is trekking through the flooded basement is actually the school’s swimming pool.

The iconic movie house from Home Alone, at 671 Lincoln Ave., in suburban Winnetka, is still standing today. While it's not currently for sale, according to Zillow, it last sold in 2012, for $1.5 million.
